Accessibility

This concept is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard CSKT IT requires (Addendum 1, Q16), and tested against WCAG 2.2 AA where it goes further.

What we build in

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring and a skip link to the main content.
  • Text and controls meet AA contrast. Colour is never the only way information is shown: project status is written out, not just coloured.
  • The project map has a full list beside it, so every location is reachable without a pointer.
  • The background video can be paused, and starts paused for anyone who prefers reduced motion.
  • The before and after slider is a real range control, usable by keyboard and screen reader.
  • Forms label every field, list errors in a summary that takes focus, and link each error to its field.
  • Every document link shows its file type and size before you open it.
  • Heavy third-party maps load only when asked, and always have a plain link as well.

How we test

Automated checks (axe and Lighthouse) on every template, then manual testing with a keyboard, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, NVDA on Windows, 200% zoom and a 320 pixel wide screen. Automated tools catch only part of the picture, so the manual pass is not optional.

Documents

New documents published on the live site are checked for tagged structure, reading order and alternative text. Remediating legacy PDFs is priced separately, as DEWR asked (Addendum 1, Q17).

Report a problem

If something on the site does not work for you, call DEWR at (406) 675-2700. We will provide the information in another format and fix the problem.
